We’re trying something new starting this week. Rather than give you the time sections of the podcast, we’re taking a cue from NPR and writing an accompanying blog post with each podcast.

So here we are…on our 39th (can that be right??) episode of Inside PR. This week we answer a bunch of questions from our listeners and we touch on the crisis in Egypt.

Shel Holtz sends in an audio question (we love him!) and Guy Skipworth asks about former employees having online relationships with your clients after they leave your agency. You can listen to our discussion about both in the podcast.

Long-time listener Danny Starr says,

“Just catching up on old episodes and the discussion on “making” viral video was really good. One thing that I think needs to be pointed out about viral video is that you never know what’s going to hit it big… and while there are things you can do like capture something funny or unexpected in the footage, I think that anyone setting out to achieve the result of having a video go viral – and we need to be clear that viral is a result, not really a strategy – needs to be putting up many different things.”

The thing is, Danny, we agree with you. In fact, at Arment Dietrich, when we get a call about making a viral video, we always joke internally that we’ll create the video the client wants and then have two guys kicking each other in the nuts so it does go viral. Not really a strategy, but we’re certain it would work! And yes, I say “nuts” in the recording.

And, while we don’t spend much time talking about what’s going on in Egypt, we do ask (and answer) an important question, “Is Internet use a human right?”

Hope you enjoy this week’s Inside PR!

This week on Inside PR, Martin, Gini and Joe start the first show of the fall season with a discussion about various newsworthy and interesting topics.

0:26 Martin opens the show.

2:37 Joe brings up the incident where Air Canada damaged the wheel chair of a young boy and how Air Canada did not respond to it on Twitter. However, they have been making progress with @actoptier.

4:02 Martin shares a listener comment from Sharrilynne Starkie. She agreed with all the advice Martin, Gini and Joe gave students but wanted to suggest another RSS reader, BlogBridge.

4:38 Martin kicks off the first episode of the fall with several news items and topics of discussion.

5:28 Gini starts off with the first item: Interviewees should always have questions for the interviewer. She suggests checking out John Heaney’s video about how to ask questions in an interview.

8:08 Gini shares the second topic: Should we use time on a plane to work or relax? She references Craig Jarrow’s 8 Ways to get Work Done on a Plane.

10:40 Gini brings up her last topic: Are we having natural conversations?

15:30 Joe shares his three topics. The first is anonymity in comments, inspired by an incident in PEI that led CBC to ban anonymous comments and require commenters to sign up before they can post one.

18:48 Joe shares his second topic: did social media kill RSS? He talks about a Neiman Labs blog post that discusses the debate.

21:20 Joe’s last topic: Does social intent determine if social networking tools succeed or fail? Fred Wilson thinks so.

24:08 Joe adds one last news worthy topic: Cranky Geeks is shutting down.

26:42 Martin jumps in with a few news worthy topics of his own. This first being about BCE’s purchase of CTV.

31:07 Martin shares his last topic: There is a social media learning curve.

32:37 Joe wants to know if you are using the new Twitter, how are you using it?

34:28 Martin closes the show.

Now, there has been lots of talk of PubSub’s financial problems lately and there is the fact the list hasn’t been updated since June 20th, but none of that negates the fact that for a brief, shining moment the Inside PR blog was at the top of the list.

We’re proud to be number 1…whatever it means. (If anyone knows, please tell us!)

Well, IPR #13 is closer to 30 minutes than we were last week, but at just over 38 minutes, we’re still over our half-hour target. With a load of comments and news items this week, we were bound to go long. Let us know what you think about the length of the show. Our instinct is to aim for 30 minutes but to let the content itself be the final arbiter. We’d be grateful for your views on the matter.

On to IPR #13. This week our discussion topic in the latter part of the show is whether or not PR firms should separately brand their social media expertise as High Road Communications announced this week they would.

You can listen to the show with the player above or download or subscribe with the links in the show blog’s sidebar.

Show Notes:

00:27 David Jones opens the show and invites comments to our comment line 206-600-4741, the IPR show blog, or to insideprcomments@gmail.com.

01:31 David introduces a comment from Glen Myles in Singapore about a new podcast called The Panel.

03:35 Terry reads a comment from Erik Deutsch a principal of the ExcelPR Group in Los Angeles.

04:25 Terry sets up an audio comment from Bryan Person who has recently started a great PR podcast called New Comm Road.

09:28 David introduces an audio comment from Terry’s colleague Joseph Thornley of the ProPR blog.

12:26 Terry talks briefly about David Phillips and his interesting approach to lecturing his students on social media. Check out his podcast/blog/lecture.

13:48 David and Terry discuss McMaster University‘s new Masters in Communications Management starting this fall. Terry reports briefly on his visit to Queen’s University and his meeting with the Associate Dean of the MBA program about more effectively integrating communications/PR in the curriculum.

17:17 Terry talks about the Podcasters Across Borders conference in Kingston where he recorded his end of IPR #13 via Skype.

20:05 Terry notes that C.C. Chapman could not make it to Podcasters Across Borders so the much anticipated Inside PR-Managing the Gray mashup will have to wait, but we will do it sometime.

20:52 Terry mentions that Thornley Fallis Communications has a new blog called PR Girlz written by a number of the women at TFC. Welcome to the blogosphere.

21:21 David and Terry tackle the show’s major topic of discussion: High Road Communications‘ decision to brand their social media expertise separately as Vox. There was some controversy in the blogosphere about using the name Vox as it is already used by another social media firm. Debate ensues.

32:52 Terry introduces Chris Clarke’s regular segment chronicling his transition from PR student to agency account coordinator.

36:41 Terry invites comments on the show’s length or on any other topic to the Inside PR blog or to insideprcomments@gmail.com.

Intro music: Our theme music is Streetwalker by CJacks and is from the Podsafe Music Network; Roger Dey is our announcer.

For those of you who are checking out our podcast and this blog, please bear with us as we’re still under construction. Terry and I wanted to get the podcast rolling and get the iTunes listing process started ASAP, so we went forward with the blog not being 100 per cent ready. We’ll be adding all the usual stuff, including a proper blogroll, about pages, contact info, etc. over the next little while. We are also integrating the PodPress plug in. <strike>I couldn’t get it to work on first go, so I’ll be getting some help on that aspect today and</strike> you should see an embedded flash player right in the show notes so you can play the podcast right from the blog if you like. And, of course, we welcome comments, feedback, suggestions, and input of any kind in either text or audio formats.
